Spring is finally here! The dreariness of the winter months has subsided and given way to the positivity, renewal, and fresh ideas of the new season. Spring can be a highly motivating time of year. However, as we tend to our families, our careers, and our homes, we shouldn’t forget to tend to ourselves. A change of season is a great time to evaluate the level of self-care we are currently providing ourselves, as well as how much we really need. Taking a few minutes per day or one day of the week is a great way to start a self-care routine. In any case, we should be on the look-out for opportunities to take care of ourselves. Looking for a few ideas on how to sneak in a little you-time? Here are a few spring self-care essentials according to my philosophy:
Use a hydrating, luminous moisturizer
Transitions between seasons can be torturous on the skin, especially when talking about our faces. Spring brings with it plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures, but it also brings pollen, allergies, and irritated sinuses. Bring on the tissues! All the itchiness, watery eyes and runny noses mean that we’re probably going to be continuously wiping parts of our faces with tissues or a handkerchief, which will eventually bring about angry looking skin. Keeping your skin moisturized during a transitional season like spring is essential. For my spring skincare routine, I like using the Soothing Serum and Daily Hydration Moisturizer from e.l.f.’s new skincare line. When used in tandem, these two products calm my skin and moisturize for the entire day!
Make your favorite, refreshing drink recipe (or find one!)
One of the best times of day is being able to sit down after being on your feet or in front of a computer for hours, and sipping on something smooth and refreshing. Just for spring, we can trade in the hot cocoa and cider for something much cooler. Go the healthy route and try fruit-infused water or a smoothie. For something with a bit more of an edge, try a spring-inspired cocktail (Pinterest is a great place to find new ones!). Whatever you choose, take the time to sit, relax, and savor the moment.
Make a new, inspirational music playlist
Music is the soundtrack to our lives. That soundtrack plays during the most important and most mundane moments we face and adds color and depth to our memories. With each season, create a new playlist – with new and old songs, songs you love, and songs you’re not sure about. Anything that makes you run a little faster on the treadmill, makes you smile without realizing it or just makes you feel. Or, if you prefer not to start from scratch, spring clean an old playlist. Delete anything that you usually skip or subconsciously drown out. Add songs that you love and want to rediscover. Your finished playlist will be the soundtrack to your Spring 2017!
Invest in a great pair of rain boots
As the old saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers.” April showers are usually relaxing and the flowers of May are beautiful, but walking through rain puddles with soggy shoes is no bueno. Protect your feet! Damp feet can eventually lead to athlete’s foot, a fungal infection that is seriously uncomfortable. Good, reliable rain boots are an essential for life, not just for spring! Invest in a sturdy rubber pair with good boot socks to keep your feet dry and warm. Hunter’s Original Rain Boots last forever and are my favorite pick.
Two words: SCENTED CANDLES
I know, it seems a little cliché. The first thing anyone thinks about when someone mentions relaxation is a bubble bath with a bunch of scented candles burning all around the tub. However, like most clichés, there’s a reason why it’s such a common trope. Scented candles are an incredibly relaxing and soothing mood booster. Light, fresh scents are perfect for spring and can also increase productivity! Vanilla, citrus, pineapple, even scents like fresh cut grass and the ocean are available in wax candle form. They can be a beautiful addition to your coffee table or vanity. Find a scent you’ll fall in love with and put it in a room that needs a spark of inspiration. You may find a bit of a spark as well.
Set a motivating spring goal
New Years is the time typically reserved for setting goals every year. Who says we have to be limited by a holiday? Spring is a great time to set new goals! A fresh wave of motivation and inspiration hits and carries us to the summer months. The key here is to ride that wave and keep pushing. Set a realistic goal; don’t overload or overwhelm yourself. Take everything you do one step at a time. Don’t get ahead of yourself. Whether it’s work related or personal, set aside time each week to work towards your goal and stick to it. Setting a goal during a season rather than an entire year creates a gameplan that can be accomplished in a much more digestible chunk. Once that goal is completed, you can take the motivation gained from that success and fuel the fire of your next one.
Initiate or renew a relationship
Friends do come and go like the seasons, but don’t let that stop you from forging new relationships. Spring is the greatest time to meet new people or reconnect with old friends. Use the excuse of great weather to go to the park or sit in an outdoor cafe and speak to at least one person. Alternatively, ring up a friend you may not have spoken to recently and catch up. Often after having these types of interactions, your heart will fill with excitement, nostalgia, and a number of other positive feelings. We, as humans, are social beings! Though we live in the time of smartphones and instant gratification, nothing beats a face to face meeting or hearing a friend’s voice. Brighten someone’s day as well as yours and start a conversation.
Self-care doesn’t always have to mean a day trip to the spa or getting our hair and nails done. It means making sure that all of your needs, be it mental, emotional, psychological, or physical, are met. It can be hard to find the time to take care of all of those things, but looking for little ways to care for yourself every day can make for a better you. Spring is the perfect time of year to make a self-care plan that can take you all the way until the cold weather sneaks up on us again! Use this time of renewal to your advantage!
