Simplify Your Makeup Routine in 5 Steps or Less!
Creating a killer makeup look can be quite complicated. There’s a reason why YouTube makeup gurus are becoming more popular; many of us want to learn the more difficult techniques for ourselves. Sometimes, though, all those techniques can make a process that is supposed to be fun and creative feel like a final exam. When our makeup application becomes a chore, what can we do to change that? The answer is to simplify your makeup routine! There are a few steps we can eliminate and still have a cohesive, beautiful look.
For some, contouring is a conundrum. Kim Kardashian and her makeup artist sparked the popularity of contouring. You’d be hard-pressed to find a makeup artist, influencer, or even enthusiast that doesn’t recommend trying it. Contouring palettes, creams, powders, and pencils currently flood the beauty market. It can be hard to know what shade is the right one, or where to correctly apply it. Honestly, it’s not a necessary step. Contouring is used to create depth in the face, but it’s mostly useful for photography rather than an everyday look. Just popping a bit of color on your cheeks will be enough to bring life to your face.
You don’t need complicated makeup techniques to create an amazing look.
Another technique brought to the spotlight by Kim K & co, baking is the process of using loose powder to set concealer on the high places of the face to create a highlight. You “bake” by letting the powder sit on your face for a certain amount of time (5-10 minutes, usually). The trickiest part of baking is finding the correct powder to use. Some powders aren’t suitable for baking because they will create flashback (the ghostly look when you take a picture with flash). Other powders may settle into fine lines and make you look cakey. Skip baking all together and simply dust a translucent powder all over the face with a powder brush, or press powder into the face with a powder puff. This will effectively set your foundation and concealer without all the extra powder, time and effort.
Instagram is a showcase of makeup accounts that love their highlighter. Their cheekbones, browbone, cupid’s bow and the tip of the nose are crucial highlighting areas. If your glow can’t be seen from space, you’re not doing it right. In reality, overloading on the highlighter can make you look like a glazed doughnut. For an everyday look, skip the highlighter. Using an illuminating primer underneath your foundation will provide a natural glow without complicating your routine.
Winged eyeliner is one of those techniques that everyone wants to learn. It also seems like it is the most difficult technique to get the hang of. Even if one eye is right, the other will be horrible and you’ll want to start over. Heavy glam looks call for a fierce wing, but you can change it up for a simpler look. Winged eyeliner is not necessary to make a look! Try lining the upper lash line without the outer flick, or smudging black liner on the upper and lower lash line for a smokier look. Or go without the liner all together! Some eyeshadow looks are best without eyeliner and you’ll save time and frustration.
Let’s be honest. Falsies are just hard. It took me forever to master them and I consider myself a fast learner. My mom has even asked me how to apply them. Without some guidance, it can be almost impossible to figure out how to get them to stay in place. Some may always wear false lashes no matter what look they’re wearing, but I rely on a good mascara for my everyday looks. Combing the lashes first with a lash comb, using a lash primer and using 2-3 coats of mascara on both top and bottom lashes are usually perfect for an everyday makeup look.
A lot of what we see our favorite beauty gurus and influencers do when applying makeup is done so that they’ll look good on camera. Though they almost always end up looking flawless, their process isn’t usually conducive to the average schedule. For those of us who have the average 15-20 minutes to get ready, we need to streamline our beauty routine. We can still use all of these techniques to achieve an amazing makeup look, but fortunately, they aren’t necessities! A simpler process can still provide gorgeous results.
