5 Reasons Why YOU Should Be Oil-Cleansing
Cleansing the face with oil may seem somewhat counter-intuitive, but it is quickly becoming a very popular cleansing trend. Oil-cleansing is simply using a combination of oils to remove oil, dirt, and sebum from the face, like any other cleanser. You then use a warm facial wash cloth to remove the excess. All natural organic oils can be combined and used or a pre-combined mixture can be bought from many different brands and retailers. So what’s the deal? Why should you be oil-cleansing? Find out 5 reasons why oil-cleansing could be beneficial to you and your skincare routine after the jump.
1. Oil-cleansing works for most skin types
Even if you have oily or combination skin, oil-cleansing will help keep the skin moisturized and blemish free. Most regular cleansers strip the skin of its essential oils. Therefore, the skin overcompensates and overproduces oil, causing the dreaded oil slick. Oil is best broken down by other oils, so oil-cleansing lifts and removes dirt while retaining the oils the skin needs. Oily and combination skin types will notice that they aren’t overly oily, and they aren’t breaking out as much.
2. Makeup removal is a breeze
Oils are fantastic at removing makeup at the end of a long day. They dissolve the makeup and break it down. If using in combination with another cleanser, like Micellar Water, it can completely clean the face. It makes getting rid of pore-clogging dirt a breeze. Make sure that you remove the excess oil after cleansing so the dirt isn’t sitting on top of your face.
3. No, it doesn’t cause breakouts
The key here is all in the technique and the materials. Since the oils easily dissolve the dirt in your pores, you don’t have to worry about them being clogged up. Your skin won’t break out – as long as you remember to rinse away excess oils and use the right oils for the job. You want to use oils that are non-comedogenic. This means that the oils will tend not to block the pores, causing blackheads and breakouts.
4. It helps keep skin moisturized
Cleansing with oil especially helps the skin retain moisture. The skin has natural moisture balance. Sometimes, normal cleansers can disrupt that balance and throw your skin into dryness or oiliness. Using an oil cleanser can provide the skin with what it needs to restore that balance. Consequently, when you apply moisturizer afterward you may find that your skin stays hydrated longer and looks healthier.
5. You have plenty of oil-cleansing options
Whatever your problem may be, there is an oil-cleansing recipe or product for you. Different oils work for different people, so finding what works best for you is important. TheOilCleansingMethod.com has a great resource here that lists different oil recipes for every skin type and problem. Also, many skincare and beauty brands are now selling their own oil-cleansers. A couple of my favorites are the Palmers Cocoa Butter Skin Therapy Cleansing Oil and the Peace Rose Oil Complex Sensitive Skin Facial Cleansing Oil by Shea Moisture. Many drugstore, mid-, and high-end brands offer cleansing oils that cater to any skin type.
Oil-cleansing is a staple in my daily skincare routine, and it can be a part of yours too! No matter what skin problems you have, the right oil cleanser can work wonders on your skin.
